stretching vs yoga

Difference between stretching vs yoga. And why is stretching essential for all of us?
Often people wonder what the difference between stretching and yoga is. Whilst the two overlap in a few areas, they are essentially two very different practices.
The main difference between yoga and stretching is the type of stretching that is applied and the differing results that derive from those stretches. The 1 on 1 assisted stretching is what is called a passive stretch whilst yoga is active stretching.
When someone else is stretching you, your brain and nervous system respond better to the stretch than when you are stretching yourself. The reason for this is that when you stretch yourself you are constantly contract another part of the body to apply the stretch.
An example of this is that if you are stretching your hamstrings yourself, you have to actively bend over to do so. Therefore your brain is engaging with a different set of muscles, as well as the hamstring, to ensure you don’t fall over. By trying to not fall over and simultaneously stretch you hamstring, your brain and nervous system aren’t able to completely relax.
Whereas if someone else is stretching you, it is completely passive. The stretching is done for you, your brain and nervous system can fully relax and allow that stretch to take place, with a longer lasting effect as a result. This longer lasting result is muscle memory.
Yoga is a comprehensive system
Yoga, on the other hand, is a comprehensive system of physical, mental, and spiritual practices that originated in ancient India. It includes postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, and ethical guidelines for living.
Anyone can practice yoga just as anyone can (and should) stretch. However, yoga workouts are designed for different ability levels. Some poses take many years to achieve and are impossible before your body has developed the necessary strength and openness.
Stretching is accessible to everyone. Although you may find that you are unable to get deep into some stretches, you will receive the same benefits as someone who is extremely flexible in the same muscle.
